A Waka Odyssey

You Belong Here

22 February 2018

We all came to New Zealand, whether by air or sea, and we all belong. We want to welcome all to enjoy A Waka Odyssey during the New Zealand Festival, because you belong here.

He waka eke noa – we are all on board the same waka.

This impactful piece was filmed at the Waka Odyssey content creation sprint by Team Rua: David Klein and Alina Manko, who met for the first time that day. They used their collective lived experience of what being New Zealanders means to them.

David said of the experience “our group were not tangata whenua, and we tried to focus on a way to attract people to the opening, even if they might not have felt a connection to what could be seen as a Maori/Pasifika event. The phrase ‘you belong here’ came to me when I was lying in bed on the day of the sprint!”

You belong here is meant to welcome people to the event, to encourage them to come and join in the cast of thousands that will be there for Part One of A Waka Odyssey at Kupe: Festival Opening Night, on Friday 23 February.
