Wellington photographer Peter Black has been making striking images of New Zealand and its people for 40 years. In his latest book, The Shops, he celebrates the overlooked poetry of the commonplace, with shops as metaphors for loss and change.

He engages in shop talk with his publisher – author and columnist Steve Braunias – who recently published his own shop book recounting a year spent trawling a West Auckland fast-food strip, The Man Who Ate Lincoln Road.
