Gather round for this free, family-friendly evening of Māori storytelling, music and performance and delight in the adventures of young hero Paeora, future navigator.

Ever since Paeora was a young boy, he was destined for the ocean. Even when his childhood friends were away playing, Paeora would be found at the ocean’s edge, gazing out into the blue beyond. Because of this, Paeora is taught all the ways of the ocean by his beloved grandfather, Tupuora. In time, he would become an expert navigator, knowledgeable of the sea.

Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal, composer, storyteller and Director of Ngā Manu Atarau at Te Papa, has crafted a moving story in the Whare Tapere tradition of Māori storytelling and performing arts. His shy hero, Paeora, loses his beloved grandfather and then his beloved childhood friend Hinemāia. Will he find his courage to fight for what is right and reclaim his sweetheart? Be there to find out and experience this beautiful story first hand.

Performed in te reo Māori with English translation at the Te Papa outdoor amphitheatre under the stars – bring a blanket and cushion. Food and beverages available at Red Gates Bar beside the amphitheatre, open from 6.30pm.
