Jane Tolerton uncovered forgotten women in her previous books, including the bestseller Convent Girls and award-winning biography of safe-sex pioneer Ettie Rout.

Amazed at how little was known about women’s active participation in World War I, she self-published Make Her Praises Heard Afar: The Hidden History of New Zealand Women in World War One, telling the stories of doctors, dentists, ambulance drivers, mathematicians, hospital managers and more.

She delves into history with director and acting coach Miranda Harcourt, whose ambulance-driving great-aunt is featured in the book.
